Character Counter

Free text and developer tool

Count characters, spaces, words, lines, UTF-8 bytes, and characters remaining against a limit.

How this tool works

Characters are counted as user-perceived Unicode symbols when supported by the browser. The tool also shows UTF-8 byte size, which can differ from the visible character count.

Worked example

“Hello!” contains six characters and six UTF-8 bytes. An emoji is one visible symbol but usually uses several bytes.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces included?

Yes. The primary result includes spaces, and a separate value excludes whitespace.

Why can bytes exceed characters?

Many Unicode symbols, including emoji, require multiple UTF-8 bytes.

Can I set a social-media limit?

Yes. Enter any nonnegative character limit to see how many characters remain.
